North Sand Mountain defeated Westbrook Christian on Feb. 16, 69-36, in Class 2A Northeast Sub-Regional tournament action.

The fifth-ranked Bisons dominated the post and checked the Warriors’ guards  in the second half.

“We missed a lot of foul shots,” Westbrook head coach Barry Ryan said. “We also lost Chloe Saunders to a knee injury. They just out played us from the get go in the second half.”

Mary Catherine Catazaro scored the first points of the game with a layup following the opening tip. Courtney Bolton followed moments later with a basket and Westbrook took a 4-0 lead at the 6:55 mark. North Sand Mountain guard Savannah Guffey connected for a 3-point shot at the 6:43 mark, giving the Lady Bisons their first points of the game.

Westbrook led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter.

NSM increased its defensive intensity in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Warriors, 16-10, to take a 29-22 lead into intermission.

NSM did not slow its offensive assault in the second half.

The Lady Bisons went on a 6-0 run to start the third quarter and outscored Westbrook 28-7 in the frame to put the game out of reach.

Mary Catharine Catanzaro, Peighton Striep, and Courtney Bolton each netted eight points for Westbrook.  Keely Ellison led North Sand Mountain with 14 points.

Ryan praised the play of seniors Catanzaro and Streight.

“I really want to thank Mary Catharine and Peighton for all that they have done for the program they have played since the 8th grade and they mean a lot to me and their teammates and hopefully their examples will better the younger girls.”
