Sims, Glencoe top Hokes Bluff

Glencoe High School defeated rival Hokes Bluff High School on April 4, 5-0, in Class 3A, Area 10 high school girls varsity softball action.

Jordan Sims pitched a complete game for the eighth-ranked Lady Yellow Jackets, earning a pair of strikeouts with the win.

The Lady Eagles threatened to score with a two-out rally in the top of the third inning.

Lark Cole slapped a high fastball to centerfield for single. Sims walked leadoff batter Chelsea Mackiel and Savannah Ward to load the bases. Sims’ blazing fastball glanced the top of Carlie Shields’ bat to force a popout, ending Hokes Bluff’s threat.

Danielle Wilson reached first base on an error to start the third inning for the Yellow Jackets. Mallory Bellyeu walked Lorren Massaro to put Glencoe runners on first and second base. Chandler Harden advanced the runners to third and second base. Wilson scored on a sacrifice fly by Sarah Wallace, giving the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead after three innings.

Sims dominated the Hokes Bluff lineup over the following three innings, sitting the Lady Eagles down in order in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Glencoe exploded for four runs in the fifth inning.

Sally Tinker, Wilson and Massaro each singled to load the bases. Wallace singled to earn an RBI and catcher Jamie McGuire earned a pair of RBIs with a fielder’s choice to extend the Lady Yellow Jackets’ lead to 5-0 at the end of five innings.

Hokes Bluff earned a pair of base runners in the top of the seventh inning, but Sims struck out Mattie Jenkins to end the game.

Massaro led the offensive attack for Glencoe, batting 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. McGuire drove in two runs.

Hannah Evans and Cole each had a hit to lead Hokes Bluff.

Glencoe improved its record to 17-8, 4-1.
