Westbrook Christian varsity boys and girls competed in the state tennis tournament in Mobile and Decatur on April 23-24.
In girls action, a pair of Westbrook Christian student-athletes turned in a fine showing at the Class 1A-3A girls state tennis tournament on Apr. 23-24 in Decatur.
In No. 2 singles, Lady Warrior 8th grader Wells Ford advanced to the quarterfinal round. After a first-round bye, Ford defeated Bayside Academy’s Kaki Citrin, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. Ford then fell to Montgomery Academy’s Mary Elizabeth Massey, 6-1, 6-1, in the third round.
In No. 1 doubles for Westbrook Ford and Shelby King posted a 6-3, 6-1 first round win over Decatur Heritage’s Arai/Slaten, followed by a 6-3, 6-1 victory over the American Christian duo of Taylor/Falls. Ford and King then lost to Bayside Academy’s Rusnyniak/Hendon, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
The Lady Warriors finished 10th in the overall team standings.
Sparked by a pair of semifinal showings, the Gadsden City High girls came in 11th place in the Class 6A state tennis tournament on April 26-27 in Mobile.
After a first round bye in No. 1 singles, Kaylee Ragan defeated Mary Montgomery’s Brianne Murphy, 6-0, 6-0, followed by a 6-1, 6-0 win over Northridge’s Mary Caitlyn Willhite. Ragan then fell to Huntsville’s Kelsey Coots by a score of 6-3, 6-1.
In No. 2 singles, Hannah Murray posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Mary Montgomery’s Megan Jordan, followed by a 6-3, 6-0 win over McGill-Toolen’s Mary Brandon Scott. Jordan then lost to Florence’s Sydney Childers, 6-3, 6-0.
The Westbrook Christian No. 1 double team of Charley Rowe and Gore helped the Warriors to a 12th place finish in the Class 1A-3A girls state tennis tournament on Apr. 23-24 in Decatur.
Rowe and Gore defeated Decatur Heritage’s Runager/Kurzhal, 6-0, 6-1, before falling 1-6, 2-6, to Bayside Academy’s Dyas/Kannegieter.
