Then join the Gadsden Public Library in its ongoing effort to preserve the oral history of Gadsden and Etowah County. Interviews are now being conducted.   Nichols Memorial Library in Gadsden is open every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for anyone interested in family history research. The library is open late on the second Thursday of each month. The library contains genealogical information and family files from all areas of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and other states. Come shop at Family Care Centers, where your purchase can help make a difference in someone’s life. The center provides food and clothing to families in need in your community. The center’s thrift stores are open to the public Tuesday – Friday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. The centers are located at 5511 Main Street in Hokes Bluff and 1014 West Main Street in Centre.

Located at 214 South 5th Street in downtown Gadsden, the Klothes Kloset offers free clothes with a great trade policy. Operating days and hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 – 11:30 a.m. and from 1 – 4 p.m. For more information, contact Carla Justice at 256-328-2702. 

The City of Rainbow City would like to remind residents that Fire Station No. 2 in the Riddles Bend community contains a safe shelter in the event of severe weather. The shelter is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Glencoe Public Library is now open in its new location at 101 West Main Street at the four-way stop sign. Library hours are 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Monday – Friday and 3 – 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For more information, contact the library at  library@cityofglencoe.net or 256-459-4285.

Goodyear Retiree Club SOAR meetings will be held every first Thursday of each month at 11 a.m. at Local 12 located at 110 Hoke Street in Gadsden. Enjoy monthly entertainment, fellowship, door prizes, travel and pot luck lunches. Annual membership fee is $12 for retiree and $3 for spouse. 

Volunteers are needed at Gadsden Regional Medical Center to serve at the  information desks on first floor information desk and second floor surgical waiting room, as well as cart drivers for visitors. You must be 18 or older to volunteer and candidates will have to undergo a background check and drug screening. The Art Department at Gadsden State Community College in partnership with the Meadows Library presents Transmigration, an exhibit of assemblages by artist Kris Catoe. The exhibition opens with a reception and gallery talk Friday at the Meadows Library Gallery from 6 – 8 p.m., and is open to the public. 18  The Alabama Department of Revenue invites new business owners to attend a free New Business Workshop at 3 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. at Elliot Community Center located at at 2827 West Meighan Blvd. in Gadsden. The workshop will cover a variety of state tax information topics, including employer withholding taxes, state and local sales taxes, property taxes, business license requirements and Alabama’s child labor law. 19  The 13th Annual C.V. Glassco Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit the C.V. Glassco Memorial Scholarship Fund begins with lunch and registration at noon, with tee-off at 1 p.m. at River Trace Golf Club on East Meighan Blvd. in Gadsden. The tournament is a four-person scramble, sponsored by Family Savings Credit Union.

13  The Northeast Alabama Genealogical Society will meet at Nichols Memorial Library at 1:30 p.m. The speaker will be Robin Sterling. Sterling has written a number of books on Blount, Cullman and Winston counties. He will speak about the railroad and the effect it had on families in Blount and Etowah County. 14 The 4th Annual “A Walk Through Time” will be held in Forrest Cemetery from 2- 5 p.m. Take a step back in time and hear about some of Gadsden’s most interesting citizens from the past. Spend this autumn afternoon listening to tales of humor, history and heroes. There will be free parking at the old Gadsden High School and trolley transportation will be provided between the parking lot and the cemetery. Admission is free and donations are encouraged.
