Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club will host Salvation Army red kettles in front of their stores as part of The Salvation Army’s 122nd Annual Red Kettle Campaign through Dec. 24. All donations made to the red kettles and “Fill the Truck” events will remain in the Gadsden area and help The Salvation Army provide food, clothing, shelter, financial assistance and other services to over 5,000 people.
New and unwrapped toys will be accepted for the “Toys from Santa” toy drive until Dec. 20 at Alabama Teachers Credit Union located at 702 Walnut Street in Gadsden. Annie’s Project is a six-week series sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, designed to empower women to manage information systems and to build local networks throughout the state. The target audience is women with a passion for agribusiness and involvement. Participants will receive training for managing information in the areas of marketing, environmental considerations, high tunnel farming, human resources, financial record-keeping, business planning, Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), risk management, value-added and women and money. The Gadsden Public Library and its branches will be closed Dec. 22 through Dec. 25 in observance of the Christmas holiday. The library will reopen Tuesday, Dec. 26 at 9 a.m. Additionally, the library will close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and be closed Jan. 1 in observance of the New Year’s holiday. Events for Healthy Woman, a free women’s health resource provided by Gadsden Regional Medical Center, will be held quarterly beginning in 2013. Previously, the chapter held monthly luncheons with speakers and information on women’s health topics. The first quarterly Healthy Woman event in 2013 will be the annual Go Red event slated for Feb. 5.

Operation Santa Claus is now underway in Etowah County. This project was first initiated nationwide in 1948 and began in Etowah county 26 years ago.
