Messenger Community Calendar for December- January

Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club will host Salvation Army red kettles in front of their stores as part of The Salvation Army’s 122nd Annual Red Kettle Campaign through Dec. 24. All donations made to the red kettles and “Fill the Truck” events will remain in the Gadsden area and help The Salvation Army provide food, clothing, shelter, financial assistance and other services to over 5,000 people.    

New and unwrapped toys will be accepted for the “Toys from Santa” toy drive until Dec. 20 at Alabama Teachers Credit Union located at 702 Walnut Street in Gadsden. Toys will be picked up by the Gadsden Fire Department and disbursed to local children in the community by the Salvation Army. For more information, contact Charly Young at outreach@atcu.com.

Want to share your nostalgic stories about what it was like growing up in Gadsden? Were you in the military?  Do you have an interesting story to tell? Then join the Gadsden Public Library in its ongoing effort to preserve the oral history of Gadsden and Etowah County. Interviews are now being conducted. Annie’s Project is a six-week series sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, designed to empower women to manage information systems and to build local networks throughout the state. The target audience is women with a passion for agribusiness and involvement. Participants will receive training for managing information in the areas of marketing, environmental considerations, high tunnel farming, human resources, financial record-keeping, business planning, Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), risk management, value-added and women and money. The workshops will meet on Thursday evenings on Jan. 10, 17, 24, 31 and Feb. 7 and 14 from 5- 8:30 p.m. (with light meal) at the Alfa Insurance Building located at 32775 U.S. Highway 231 in Ashville. Nichols Memorial Library in Gadsden is open every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for anyone interested in family history research. The library is open late on the second Thursday of each month. The library contains genealogical information and family files from all areas of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and other states. The Gadsden Public Library and its branches will be closed Dec. 22 through Dec. 25 in observance of the Christmas holiday. The library will reopen Tuesday, Dec. 26 at 9 a.m. Additionally, the library will close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and be closed Jan. 1 in observance of the New Year’s holiday. The GPL wishes everyone a safe and happy holidays!

Events for Healthy Woman, a free women’s health resource provided by Gadsden Regional Medical Center, will be held quarterly beginning in 2013. Previously, the chapter held monthly luncheons with speakers and information on women’s health topics. The first quarterly Healthy Woman event in 2013 will be the annual Go Red event slated for Feb. 5.

Come shop at Family Care Centers, where your purchase can help make a difference in someone’s life. The center provides food and clothing to families in need in your community. The center’s thrift stores are open to the public Tuesday – Friday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. The centers are located at 5511 Main Street in Hokes Bluff and 1014 West Main Street in Centre.

Operation Santa Claus is now underway in Etowah County. This project was first initiated nationwide in 1948 and began in Etowah county 26 years ago. Please help to ensure that no one is forgotten during the holidays by donating new and unwrapped items suggested on the wish list or by sending a monetary donation. Goodyear Retiree Club SOAR meetings will be held the first Thursday of each month at 11 a.m. at Local 12 located at 110 Hoke Street in Gadsden. Enjoy monthly entertainment, fellowship, door prizes, travel and pot luck lunches. Annual membership fee is $12 for retiree and $3 for spouse.

Volunteers are needed at Gadsden Regional Medical Center to serve at the  information desks on the first floor and the second floor surgical waiting room, as well as cart drivers for visitors. You must be 18 or older to volunteer. Candidates must undergo a background check and drug screening.
