Gaston ran out to a 10-point first quarter lead and never looked back on the way to a 41-26 victory over West End in the Etowah County Schools girls basketball tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday (Jan. 15) at Gadsden State.

The No. 3 seed Lady Bulldogs (8-10) play No. 2 seed Hokes Bluff in Wednesday’s semifinals.

Kierra Porter scored 10 of her game-high 12 points in the first eight minutes, as Gaston built a 16-6 lead.

Gaston head coach Tonya Bogle was pleased with her team’s effort.

“It was a good win against a team that has big post players. We did a good job defensively. We have a young team that has had to grow up this season.”

The second quarter was all Lady Dawgs, as they extended their lead to 25-11 at the half. Kenterra Blackwell scored five of her 10 points during the second quarter.

Abby Elrod took up the scoring slack in the third period, scoring five of her 11 points as Gaston built a 35-17 after three quarters.

The fourth period belonged to the No. 6 seed Lady Patriots (7-10) who outscored Gaston 9-6.

Morgan Cleveland led West End with 10 points, followed by Brittney Self with eight.
