Community Calendar for April

All Etowah County Elementary Schools will hold kindergarten registration on Tuesday, April 23. Please bring your child’s blue immunization form (available from your pediatrician or the health department), certified birth certificate, social security card and proof of residence. Alabama law provides that a child must be five years of age on or before Sept. 2 to be eligible to attend kindergarten. Please contact the elementary school in your district if you have any questions.   

On the first Saturday of every month, Gadsden Regional’s Women’s & Children’s department will hold free childbirth classes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Gadsden Regional Room of Building 500 on the GRMC campus. The classes include sessions on infant care with pediatricians; a presentation by Success By 6 on infant and child development; sessions about pain control/ epidurals, labor and delivery, and the post-partum period; information on breast feeding from a lactation consultant; and a tour of the hospital’s Women’s & Children’s unit. Breakfast and lunch are provided and attendees will receive free samples and door prizes. Mothers who plan to deliver at GRMC are welcome to attend and may bring along a guest. The Glencoe Public Library wishes to preserve the past of the City of Glencoe. The library is looking for pictures from the beginning in 1853 (when a quarry began operating at Rock Springs) to the present. The library also is looking for past yearbooks from the early 1930s to the present to add to its current collection. If you have not visited the library, please stop by. The city, the library board and many volunteers have worked to make the library a beautiful place. Foster families are the key to unlocking the opportunity for teens in foster care. Invest in their future by mentoring a child or teen as a Therapeutic Foster Parent. Want to share your nostalgic stories about what it was like growing up in Gadsden? Were you in the military?  Do you have an interesting story to tell? Then join the Gadsden Public Library in its ongoing effort to preserve the oral history of Gadsden and Etowah County. Interviews are now being conducted. Nichols Memorial Library in Gadsden is open every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for anyone interested in family history research. The library contains genealogical information and family files from all areas of Alabama, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and other states. Goodyear Retiree Club SOAR meetings will be held the first Thursday of each month at 11 a.m. at Local 12 located at 110 Hoke Street in Gadsden. Enjoy monthly entertainment, fellowship, door prizes, travel and pot luck lunches. Annual membership fee is $12 for retiree and $3 for spouse.
 
Volunteers are needed at Gadsden Regional Medical Center to serve at the  information desks on the first floor and the second floor surgical waiting room, as well as cart drivers for visitors. You must be 18 or older to volunteer. Candidates must undergo a background check and drug screening. 6 The Alabama Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Division Association, the Vulcans, invites all paratroopers and gliders men, past or present, to the chapter’s monthly meeting at 11:30 a.m. at Rowe Hall on the Jacksonville State University campus. City of Jacksonville Mayor Johnny L. Smith and 82nd Airborne Division Association National President Harold A. Schroeder will attend. Families are welcome. Come partake in the meeting with chapter officers and share your stories with your fellow paratroopers.

6 The UAB Sarcoidosis Outreach and Support Group will host the Sarcoidosis Hope Walk, a 1K fun walk or 5K walk for the UAB. Sarcoidosis Research Fund. A Civil War reenactment will take place at Janney Furnace Park in Ohatchee from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. A battle will take place each day at 2 p.m. Admission is free. The event also features food vendors, music and demonstrations.

7 Christ Central Church Youth will hold a silent auction. Bidding begins at 5 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Reservations can be made by calling the church at 256-442-6625. Dinner is $5 per person or $15 for a family. The auction goes to help fund our summer mission trip. We already have some great items, such as golf and tennis lessons from the Gadsden Country Club, handmade duck decoy and duck call, Texaco collectible items, a fully furnished fish fry and much more. 12 The Etowah County School Foundation 6th Annual Golf Tournament will be held at Twin Bridges Golf Club. All proceeds will benefit the Etowah County School Foundation.
