Several local student-athletes turned in medal-winning performances on May 3-4 at the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Class 1A-2A-3A state track and field meets at Selma and the Class 4A-5A-6A state meets in Gulf Shores.
Glencoe sophomore Thomas Ozmint won the area’s lone first-place medal with his time of 43.10 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles event in the Class 3A boys meet.
Bringing home the silver in the Class 2A boys meet was Gaston senior Jackson Bogle with his toss of 162 feet and five inches in the javelin throw event and Westbrook’s Christian’s Lorien Welch in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.90 seconds. Welch also won the bronze in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.04 seconds.
Also winning bronze medals were Westbrook Christian’s Nic Ford in the boys 2A boys 300-meter hurdles (42.85 seconds); Gadsden City’s Treshunn Miliner in the boys 6A 100-meter dash (11.25 seconds); Gadsden City’s Dejuan Hall in the discus (144 feet, 11 inches); Sardis’ Selena Tarvin the 4A girls 100-meter hurdles (16.98 seconds); and the Westbrook boys 1600-meter relay team (46.14 seconds).
Posting fourth-place showings were Etowah’s Xavier Caldwell in the 5A boys triple jump (21 feet, five inches) and Ivan McKinney in the 5A high jump ((six feet).
Taking fifth place were Jackson Bogle in the 2A boys shot put (43 feet, five inches); Dejuan Hall in the 6A boys shot put (51 feet, 6.5 inches); Xavier Caldwell in the 5A boys long jump (21 feet, five inches); Gadsden City’s Devin Williams in the 6A boys high jump (six feet, two inches); and the Westbrook boys 3200-meter relay team (9:24.39).
Other local top 10 finishers were Westbrook’s Nic Ford (6th in the 2A boys 110-meter hurdles); Westbrook’s Devernon Marshall (6th in the 2A boys 400-meter dash); Glencoe’s Jensen Napper (6th in the 3A girls 400-meter dash); Gaston’s Abby Elrod (6th in the 2A girls javelin); Gadsden City’s Tansley Lacont (6th in the 6A girls triple jump); the 6th place Gadsden City boys 400-meter relay team of Tony Pope, Zamien Howell, Kai Gray and Treshunn Miliner); the 6th place Westbrook 1600-meter relay team; Glencoe’s Blake Christian (7th in the 3A boys 300-meter hurdles); Gaston’s Jacob Johnson (8th in the 2A boys 3200-meter run); Sardis’ Selena Tarvin (8th in the 4A girls triple jump); Southside’s Brady Stephens (8th in the 5A boys javelin); Sardis’ Leah Williams (8th in the 4A girls 100-meter hurdles); Gadsden City’s Tansley Lacount (9th in the 6A girls long jump); Etowah’s Trey Williams (9th in the 5A boys 400-meter dash); Southside’s Claire Graves (10th in the 5A girls javelin); and the Etowah boys 10th place 3200-meter relay team.
In team scoring, the Gadsden City boys finished 9th in 6A; the Westbrook boys 10th in 2A; the Gaston boys 14th in 2A; the Westbrook girls 15th in 2A; the Sardis girls 14th in 4A; the Glencoe boys 18th in 3A; and the Etowah boys 20th in 5A.
