Etowah County Deputy Coroner Michael (Mike) J. Head has announced his intention to run for the local Coroner’s post during the June 2014 primary.
Current coroner, Michael Gladden, has decided to run for another post and not seek re-election.
Head has served as Deputy Coroner during two administrations—eight years under former coroner, Bill Bragg and for the last five years under Gladden.
He is a member of the National Association of Coroner’s and Medical Examiners and the Alabama Coroners Association.
Head, the son of Gadsden Police Lt. John Head, enrolled in the Gadsden City Schools vocational program and trained to be an electrician under the tutelage of Instructor Johnny Parker – “a great teacher who knew how to encourage young men to learn a trade.” He graduated from Emma Sansom High School in 1982 and furthered his education at the Alabama Technical School of Trades (now, Gadsden State Community College) by earning an Associate’s Degree in Electricity in 1984.
He became a member of the Etowah County Rescue Squad. As a member of this renowned group, he was encouraged to enroll at GSCC in the Emergency Medical Technology Program (Paramedic). He finished with his certificate in 1986. He is a long-time member of the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office where he serves as a reserve whenever needed.
Head is now the owner of Head Properties, a prosperous commercial and residential real estate firm. The 49 year old entrepreneur is a member of the Etowah County Republican Party Executive Committee and the First Baptist Church of Gadsden. He serves as a volunteer at the annual Riverfest Festival on the electrical team and performs the same duties for the Rainbow City’s Chocolate Festival.
Head has been married to Michelle for over 20 years; they are parents to son John, daughter-in-law Rachel and grandparents of a 2-year-old grandson Bentley.
