The Etowah County 4-H program still has slots available for this year’s Summer Funshop, “NASA Summer of Innovation,” for ages 8-19. The funshop will be held from July 22-26 from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day at the Etowah County Extension Office located at 3200-A West Meighan Boulevard in Gadsden. Cost for the week is $35. Do you have a child with a suspected handicapping condition between the ages of 3-21 and living within the confines of the Gadsden City School system? Please call the Gadsden City Board of Education Special Education Department at 256-549-2914. Testing is available.
    
On the first Saturday of every month, Gadsden Regional’s Women’s & Children’s department will conduct free childbirth classes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Gadsden Regional Room of Building 500 on the GRMC campus. The classes include sessions on infant care with pediatricians; a presentation by Success By 6 on infant and child development; sessions about pain control/ epidurals, labor and delivery, and the post-partum period; information on breast feeding from a lactation consultant; and a tour of the hospital’s Women’s & Children’s unit. Breakfast and lunch are provided and attendees will receive free samples and door prizes. Mothers who plan to deliver at GRMC are welcome to attend and may bring along a guest. Jazzy June has become Musical Mondays. Looking for a Jazzy lunchtime? The Water Wall located between the Pitman Theater and Senior Activity Center in downtown Gadsden, is the place to be. Gadsden Toastmasters is the local club for Toastmasters International servicing Etowah, Calhoun and Marshall counties. Toastmasters is an excellent way to improve confidence, become a better speaker and gain valuable leadership experience. Club meetings are fun, positive and mutually supportive. The Glencoe Public Library wishes to preserve the past of the City of Glencoe. The library is looking for pictures from the beginning in 1853 (when a quarry began operating at Rock Springs) to the present. The library also is looking for past yearbooks from the early 1930s to the present to add to its current collection. If you have not visited the library, please stop by. The city, the library board and many volunteers have worked to make the library a beautiful place. Then join the Gadsden Public Library in its ongoing effort to preserve the oral history of Gadsden and Etowah County. Interviews are now being conducted. Nichols Memorial Library in Gadsden is open every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for anyone interested in family history research. The Teen and Children’s department of the Gadsden Public Library will collect gently-used clothing throughout the month July for a back-to-school sale on Aug. 9-11 at the library’s Lena Martin Room from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The goal of this sale is to provide affordably priced clothing that may be worn for the upcoming school year. No item will be priced over $5. Money raised at the sale will fund future programming and supplies for both the Children’s Department and the Teen Zone. Please donate gently-used children’s and teen apparel only. All items with holes or stains will be discarded at the library’s discretion. Donations may be dropped off at the GPL Circulation Desk during regular library business hours to Paulette, Chris, Serina or Mary. Goodyear Retiree Club SOAR meetings will be held the first Thursday of each month at 11 a.m. at Local 12 located at 110 Hoke Street in Gadsden. Enjoy monthly entertainment, fellowship, door prizes, travel and pot luck lunches. Annual membership fee is $12 for retiree and $3 for spouse.

The Mental Health America of Etowah County is offering stress and anger management, domestic violence prevention and parenting classes for adults. Certificates will be given upon completion of each course. Instructors are Alicia Harrel, MA and Kelly Clark, LBSW. The total charge for each course is $60. Volunteers are needed at Gadsden Regional Medical Center to serve at the  information desks on the first floor and the second floor surgical waiting room, as well as cart drivers for visitors. You must be 18 or older to volunteer. Candidates must undergo a background check and drug screening. The National Megan’s Law Helpline at 888-ASK-PFML, 888-275-7365 is available to provide support to communities on issues related to accessing sex offender registration information, responsible use of information, sexual abuse prevention resources and accessing crime victim support services. Parents for Megan’s Law (PFML) staff provide assistance to the community in accessing their state sex offender registries and prevention specialists provide support to parents and community members to assist in their sexual abuse prevention education strategies. Certified rape crisis counselors are available to support all victims of violent crime and to provide geographically appropriate referrals. The Sex Offender Registration Tips Program provides the public an opportunity to report registrants who are failing to comply with registration requirements, employment or supervision restrictions or who are in positions of trust where they can access children. Tips can be provided via the help line or at www.parentsformeganslaw.org. This program is not intended to be used to report police emergencies. Dial 911 or contact your local law enforcement agency directly for emergencies. Agency deputized staff collaborate with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to facilitate the appropriate follow-up action.
