Hospice volunteers needed. New Beacon Hospice is looking for compassionate people to provide volunteer services to our patients in the Etowah, Cherokee and Marshall county areas. Volunteers are needed to sit with patients and provide companionship, run errands, relieve caregivers or possibly do light cooking and/or housekeeping. On the first Saturday of every month, Gadsden Regional Medical Center’s Women’s & Children’s Department will conduct free childbirth classes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Gadsden Regional Room of Building 500 on the GRMC campus. The classes include sessions on infant care with pediatricians; a presentation by Success By 6 on infant and child development; sessions about pain control/epidurals, labor and delivery, and the post-partum period; information on breast feeding from a lactation consultant; and a tour of the hospital’s Women’s & Children’s unit. Breakfast and lunch are provided and attendees will receive free samples and door prizes. Mothers who plan to deliver at GRMC are welcome to attend and may bring along a guest. Gadsden Toastmasters is the local club for Toastmasters International serving Etowah, Calhoun and Marshall counties. Toastmasters is an excellent way to improve confidence, become a better speaker and gain valuable leadership experience. Club meetings are fun, positive and mutually supportive. The Gadsden Public Library’s Children’s Department and The American Red Cross will hold a “Letters to Soldiers” campaign. The GPL will be providing a letter template that you can fill out to be sent to a soldier through the American Red Cross. Please take advantage of this program to thank a soldier for everything that he/she does for our country. Completed letter must be turned in to the GPL Children’s Department by Nov. 30. The VFW 8600 Chapter located on Rainbow Drive hosts a dance every Friday night starting at 8 p.m. Admission is $5. The Gold Dust Band will be playing a mix of classic and modern country music. The Glencoe Public Library wishes to preserve the past of the City of Glencoe. The library is looking for pictures from the beginning in 1853 (when a quarry began operating at Rock Springs) to the present. The library also is looking for past yearbooks from the early 1930s to the present to add to its current collection. If you have not visited the library, please stop by. Nichols Memorial Library in Gadsden is open every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for anyone interested in family history research. Goodyear Retiree Club SOAR meetings will be held the first Thursday of each month at 11 a.m. at Local 12 located at 110 Hoke Street in Gadsden. Enjoy monthly entertainment, fellowship, door prizes, travel and pot luck lunches. Annual membership fee is $12 for retiree and $3 for spouse.

Mental Health America of Etowah County offers Stress and Management, Domestic Violence Prevention and Parenting cla-sses for adults. Certificates will be given upon completion of each course. 21 The Gadsden-Etowah Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) honors Robert Frank Thomas, Robert Avery and James Smith. These three men from the City of Gadsden had a dream to attend the March on Washington. With the permission of their parents, they began to hitchhike. Along their journey, they got a ride to Washington. We honor these men for realizing that we must make a stand for the rights of our people for justice for voting rights. These young men will be honored at Carver Community Center at 6 p.m. Tickets at $20 per person and $120 for a table of seven. 22-23 The Gadsden State Community College Fine Arts Department and Gadsden State Band Boosters will host the 26th Annual Middle/Junior High School Honor Band Clinic in the Wallace Hall Fine Arts Center located on the Wallace Drive Campus of Gadsden State. The Honor Band Clinic is for musicians in grades 5 through 9 and is a prerequisite for the All-State Junior High Band. This experience will give students an opportunity to participate in an All-Honor Band with students from area schools. The musicians will have the opportunity to study with accomplished directors and audition for chair placements. Pre-registration is required and must be completed by Nov. 13. A general assembly will be held in the Inzer Student Center Cafeteria at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and the clinic will continue through Saturday. The culmination of the clinic will feature all the musicians in a free concert for the public on Saturday at 6 p.m. The registration fee is $50 per student and covers meals and awards during the clinic. 1 The Gadsden Woman’s Club presents our annual Holiday Tour of Homes from 2-5 p.m. This year, five beautiful homes, the Gadsden Art Museum and the Gadsden Woman’s Club will graciously open their doors to celebrate the holidays with everyone. Admission to all seven locations will be $10 in advance at the following places: H&M Freeman Motors, Absolute Fitness, Floyd Law Firm and the Gadsden Museum of Art. The day of the tour tickets will be $15 and you can purchase them at any of the tour locations. Please note: we will not allow anyone in wearing heels as this does tear up the floors of the homes on display. The Woman’s Club will host refreshments to begin the merry journey.

2-4 Gadsden Regional Medical Center is planning early for a December trip to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C., and signups are under way.
