The Gadsden Public Library and its branches will close at 5 p.m. on December 9, December 16 and December 21. Additionally, the Gadsden Public Library and its branches will be closed December 24 and 25 in observance of the Christmas holiday and January 1 in observance of New Year’s Day. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season!

New Beacon Hospice is looking for compassionate people to provide volunteer services to patients in the Etowah, Cherokee and Marshall county areas. Volunteers are needed to sit with patients and provide companionship, run errands, relieve caregivers or possibly do light cooking and/or housekeeping. On the first Saturday of every month, Gadsden Regional Medical Center’s Women’s & Children’s Department conducts free childbirth classes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Gadsden Regional Room of Building 500 on the GRMC campus. The classes include sessions on infant care with pediatricians; a presentation by Success By 6 on infant and child development; sessions about pain control/epidurals, labor and delivery, and the post-partum period; information on breast feeding from a lactation consultant; and a tour of the hospital’s Women’s & Children’s unit. Breakfast and lunch are provided and attendees will receive free samples and door prizes. Mothers who plan to deliver at GRMC are welcome to attend and may bring along a guest. Gadsden Toastmasters is the local club for Toastmasters International serving Etowah, Calhoun and Marshall counties. Toastmasters is an excellent way to improve confidence, become a better speaker and gain valuable leadership experience. Club meetings are fun, positive and mutually supportive. The VFW 8600 Chapter located on Rainbow Drive hosts a dance every Friday night starting at 8 p.m. Admission is $5. The Gold Dust Band will be playing a mix of classic and modern country music. The Glencoe Public Library wishes to preserve the past of the City of Glencoe. The library is looking for pictures from the beginning in 1853 (when a quarry began operating at Rock Springs) to the present. The library also is looking for past yearbooks from the early 1930s to the present to add to its current collection. If you have not visited the library, please stop by. Glencoe Public Library will have “Fine Free Day” during the month of December. All overdue books and movies can be returned with no fines due. Please return all overdue materials during this time. Library hours are Mon. – Fri., 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Tues. and Thurs., 3-5 p.m. A drop box is also available.

Foster families are the key to unlocking the opportunity for teens in foster care. Invest in their future by mentoring a child or teen as a Therapeutic Foster Parent. Want to share your nostalgic stories about what it was like growing up in Gadsden? Were you in the military? Do you have an interesting story to tell? Then join the Gadsden Public Library in its ongoing effort to preserve the oral history of Gadsden and Etowah County. Interviews are now being conducted. Nichols Memorial Library in Gadsden is open every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for anyone interested in family history research. The library contains genealogical information and family files from all areas of Alabama, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and other states. Mental Health America of Etowah County offers Stress and Management, Domestic Violence Prevention and Parenting classes for adults. Certificates will be given upon completion of each course. Instructors are Alicia Harrell, MS, and Kelly Clark, LBSW. The total charge for each course is $80. Volunteers are needed at Gadsden Regional Medical Center to serve at the information desks on the first floor and the second floor surgical waiting room, as well as cart drivers for visitors. In an effort to help the needy children in Etowah County have a Merry Christmas, the Gadsden Fire Department is accepting donations for the Toys from Santa program. Monetary or new, unwrapped toy donations are being accepted at all Gadsden Fire Station locations from now until December 20. Those who wish to donate large quantities of new, unwrapped toys may schedule a pick up time by calling 256-549-4566.

For those interested in adopting a child at Christmas, The Salvation Army has Angel Trees at Chick-Fil-A, Ronnie Watkins Ford, First United Methodist Church of Gadsden or at The Salvation Army office. 14 Children will have a chance to visit with Santa and enjoy cookies and milk at the fourth annual Snacks with Santa at the Mary G. Hardin Center for Cultural Arts from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. This free event will be held in the center’s first-floor lobby. It is sponsored by Downtown Gadsden, Inc. and the University of Alabama Gadsden Center. The Sugar Plum Fairies from the Downtown Gadsden Dance Conservatory will be there and parents are encouraged to bring your cameras to capture that moment of your little one with Santa and the Fairies. Admissions into The Center for Cultural Arts and Imagination Place will be at a discounted price of $2 for children and $3 for adults.
