Help your community and neighbors during of need. Become a member of CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). Sign up for a free training session on May 6, 8, 13, 20 and 22 from 5 – 8 p.m. at the Gadsden/Etowah County Emergency Management Agency. You must attend all six sessions to be certified. Seating is limited. CERT includes training in medical disaster, fire safety, search and rescue, team organization, emergency preparedness, assisting responders and emergency networking. Kindergarten registration for all Etowah County elementary schools is scheduled for Friday, April 25, 2014, except the following: Carlisle Elementary School – Tuesday, April 22, 2014, and Southside Elementary School – Monday, April 21, 2014. Please bring your child’s Blue Immunization Form (available from your pediatrician or the Health Department), Certified Birth Certificate, Social Security Card and proof of residence. Alabama law provides that a child must be five years of age on or before Sept. 1 to be eligible to attend kindergarten.

The Northeast Alabama Genealogical Society and the Alabama City Historical Society are working on the preservation and maintenance of Clayton Cemetery. The NAGS is in the process of publishing a book on Clayton Cemetery and is interested in obtaining any history on the cemetery and information on those buried there. New Beacon Hospice is looking for compassionate people to provide volunteer services to patients in the Etowah, Cherokee and Marshall county areas. Volunteers are needed to sit with patients and provide companionship, run errands, relieve caregivers or possibly do light cooking and/or housekeeping. The Rainbow Fly Fishing Club is a family-friendly club that promotes the sport of fly fishing. The club is based in Rainbow City with members of all ages (both fishermen and fisherwomen) from all over North Alabama. Club meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. on non-holiday weeks at the Aquaculture Education and Development Center at Gadsden State Community College. On the first Saturday of every month, Gadsden Regional’s Women’s & Children’s department will hold free childbirth classes 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Gadsden Regional Room of Building 500 on the GRMC campus. The classes include sessions on infant care with pediatricians; a presentation by Success By 6 on infant and child development; sessions about pain control/epidurals, labor and delivery and the postpartum period; information on breastfeeding from a lactation consultant; and a tour of the hospital’s Women’s & Children’s unit. The dates of the classes are April 5, May 3, June 7, July 12, Aug. 2, Sept.6, Oct. 4, Nov. 1 and Dec. 6. Breakfast and lunch are provided and attendees will receive free samples and door prizes. Registration for free GED classes at Gadsden State Community College will be held every first and third Friday morning at 8 a.m. (no late arrivals and registration should be completed by 12:30 p.m.)  Evening registration will be held every second and fourth Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. New students may register by coming to the second floor of Brown Hall located on the East Broad Campus in Gadsden. GED classes meet Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. or 1 – 4 p.m. Evening classes will meet from 5 – 8 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. GED classes are free, and are open to all adults 17 or older who have not finished high school. Those who are 16 or 17 years old must call 256-549-8698 prior to registration. Classes are designed to improve reading, writing, and math skills, and increase general knowledge in social studies and general science. Upon completion of GED, students are eligible for one free class at a two-year college in the state of Alabama. Did you know that Gadsden has a Toastmasters Club? Part of Toastmasters International, Greater Gadsden Speakers-A Toastmasters Club is dedicated to helping its members become confident and excellent communicators and leaders in an encouraging and fun environment.  The Toastmasters Club can help to improve your communication skills, polish your already excellent speaking skills and build solid leadership skills. The club meets every Thursday at the Coosa Valley YMCA from 7-8 p.m. in the Activity Room. The VFW 8600 Chapter located on Rainbow Drive hosts a dance every Friday night starting at 8 p.m. Admission is $5. The Gold Dust Band plays a mix of classic and modern country music. The Glencoe Public Library wishes to preserve the past of the City of Glencoe. The library is looking for pictures from the beginning in 1853 (when a quarry began operating at Rock Springs) to the present. The library also is looking for past yearbooks from the early 1930s to the present to add to its current collection. If you have not visited the library, please stop by. Foster families are the key to unlocking the opportunity for teens in foster care. Invest in their future by mentoring a child or teen as a Therapeutic Foster Parent. Nichols Memorial Library in Gadsden is open every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for anyone interested in family history research. 24,25 In celebration of William Shakespeare’s 450th birthday, CharACTers and Downtown Gadsden Inc. are proud to present The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged).  All 37 Plays in 97 Minutes, directed by Cody Carlton, starring Jason Bozeman, Brian Boozer and Jason St. John. An irreverent, fast-paced romp through the Bard’s plays, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) was London’s longest-running comedy having clocked a very palpable nine years in London’s West End at the Criterion Theatre! Join these madcap men in tights as they weave their wicked way through all of Shakespeare’s works. The event will be held at the Pitman Theatre at 7:30pm. Tickets are $4.50 and can be purchased at the DGI office at 635 Broad Street, The University of Alabama Gadsden Center at 121 North 1st Street or at the door. All proceeds will go towards continued renovations at the Pitman. Doors will open at 6:30; feel free to bring your dinner and a cooler for an evening full of fun and laughter.

25,26 The Highway 132 (18 mile) Yard Sale will begin at the Hwy. 278 West/ 132 junction, go through Altoona and end in Oneonta. Anyone may have a yard sale along the route as long as they get permission from the landowner.

26 Physicians Who Care will holds its 3rd annual 5K Run/1 Mile Walk on April 26. Preregistration will be prior to April 22. Race day registration will be from 8 – 9 a.m. at The Chamber, Gadsden & Etowah County located at 1 Commerce Square in Gadsden across from the YMCA. A tag provided for participants to wear in honor of cancer survivors and in memory of those who have lost their battle with cancer. Free refreshments and tee shirts will be provided for all participants following the Run/Walk. Prize money for the top three male and female runners will be $300 for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third place. Trophies will be awarded to the first three males and female finishers in each age division. All monies raised will go to the Etowah County Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organization founded to help local cancer patients with immediate needs and to help patients who live or receive cancer treatment in Etowah County. 26 The Southside High School and Rainbow Middle School bands will sponsor their second annual mattress sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Name-brand mattress sets will be sold at 30-60 percent below retail prices. These are all top quality mattresses with full factory warranties. All sizes are available and free layaway is offered. All mattresses will be ready for pickup of delivery within one to two weeks, but if buyers can’t wait that long they can take a floor model home on the same day. All proceeds will go directly to The Pride of Southside.

26 The Etowah County Beekeepers Association will host a free workshop at Carnes Recreation Center in Attalla from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Master beekeeper Fred Harrison will be the presenter. The workshop is open to the public.

8 The month of May is National Community Action Month. We invite you to celebrate with us at our 10th Annual Community Action Banquet/Fundraiser at 6 p.m. at the GOL Activity Center. 8 The Etowah County Extension Office is having a birthday party to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Smith-Lever Act by the United States Congress. This act created what is now known as the Extension Service in each state. Please join us in celebrating this magnificent milestone in our organization’s history from 6 – 8:30 p.m. at Crosspoint Community Church located at 2730 Wills Creek Road in Gadsden. This event will also serve as the 2014 Etowah County 4-H Awards Banquet and Alumni gathering. Dinner will be served at the event. 17 Calling all local authors! The Gadsden Public Library is sponsoring Local Author Day 2014 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.  If you are from Etowah County and have published a book, then this is your day! This program is free to the public. Discover new writers, buy some books and get them signed by the author. Meet all of our authors by playing our Local Author Passport Game. Have your passport stamped at all of our author/vendor tables and enter to win “Gadsden Memories, Volume II). Author space is limited, so registration is required. 17 St. James Catholic School in Gadsden will sponsor the Saints and Sprinters 5K Run/Walk and One Mile Fun Run at the parking lot of Convention Hall in Gadsden. The 5K starts at 8 a.m. and the mile run starts at 9 a.m. An awards ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Preregistration is $25 dollars and includes a tee shirt and goody bag. Same-day registration is $25 and includes a goody bag. Preregistration forms with payment must be returned by May 2. 30 A banquet celebrating cancer survivors living in the Etowah County area has been scheduled. The banquet will be at 6 p.m. at Convention Hall and is hosted by the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life of Etowah County.
