The City of Gadsden cut the ribbon on Gadsden Recycles, the site of the city’s expanded recycling program at 306 Henry Street.

The facility has been open for a while accepting some types of recyclable material, but Environmental Services Supervisor Howell Matthews said it now accepts almost any kind of material that can be recycled, from cardboard and styrofoam to electronics and metals.

Mayor Sherman Guyton said the facility should have room to expand and it has plenty of room to store recyclables that are brought in.

In the first quarter of 2014, he said, the facility took in 71,000 pounds of cardboard, 60,000 pounds of newsprint, 20,000 pounds of plastic, 700 pounds of non-ferrous metal (aluminum), 2,000 pounds of ferrous metal, 2,000 pounds of electronics, 5,000 pounds of glass and 100 pounds of styrofoam.
