The search continues for a new head football coach at West End High School.

The Etowah County Board of Education accepted Randy Hallmark’s resignation as head football coach and assistant principal at its April meeting.

Hallmark posted a 1-19 record in the 2012 and 2013 seasons. It was his second stint at Walnut Grove.

From 1990-97, Hallmark’s teams went 64-26 and reached the state playoffs six times.

“(Principal) Mr. (Craig) Shoemaker is in the process of interviewing folks right now, and he’s had a good bit of interest in the position,” said Etowah County Superintendent Alan Cosby. “I’m not sure how soon he’ll have a recommendation, so I can’t tell you a timetable.”

The board will conduct a special-called meeting May 22 at 4 p.m.

Cosby said members of Hallmark’s staff are conducting spring drills for the Patriots.

West End’s new coach will be the program’s sixth since 2000, following Butch Dixon (1998-2002), Mike Smith (2003-06), Matt Brooks (2007-08), Hayden Stockton (2009-11) and Hallmark.

The Patriots, who have experienced six consecutive losing seasons finished 0-10 this past year while allowing a school-record 404 points.

Cosby hopes the new coach can restore West End’s winning tradition.

“I would like to see the program built back up and enjoying success like it had in the ’90s again.”
