The Summer Commencement Ceremony for Gadsden State Community College will be held Thursday, August 7 at 6 p.m. at the Wallace Hall Fine Arts Center in Gadsden.
Dr. Helen T. McAlpine will address the graduates during the ceremony. Dr. McAlpine is currently serving as the interim president of Gadsden State.
In September 2010, Dr. McAlpine was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as a member of the President’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
She has received numerous honors including the National Conference for Community and Justice Brotherhood and Sisterhood Award; the Girl Scouts Scroll of Honor-Lifetime Achievement Award; Path of Honor Award from the Huntsville/Madison County Senior Center, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Award from Delta Theta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
In addition, Dr. McAlpine serves the community and nation through membership with various civic organizations including Rotary, NAFEO Board of Directors, and BB&T Bank Board of Directors.
She received her bachelor’s degree from Talladega College, a master’s degree from Jacksonville State University, and a doctorate from the University of Alabama.
Dr. McAlpine has over 40 years of experience in the field of education including the Alabama Community College System, Huntsville City School System, Gadsden City School System, and Jacksonville State University.
