NCAA Regionals Review

Five teams from the Southeastern Conference advanced to the Super Regionals of the NCAA baseball tournament.

Florida, the overall No. 1 seed for the tournament, rolled through its regional – including a 10-1 win over Georgia Tech in the final. The Gators face in-state rival Florida State in the best-of-three Super Regionals in Gainesville.

LSU needed two games to advanced past Rice, but the Tigers defeated the Owls, 5-2, in a winner-take-all regional final to advance to the Super Regionals. To advance to the College World Series, LSU will need to defeat Coastal Carolina in Baton Rouge.

Texas A&M cruised through its regional last weekend, including a 22-2 victory over Wake Forest. The Aggies advanced to the Super Regionals, where they will face TCU for the second straight season. The Horned Frogs eliminated the Aggies a season ago.

South Carolina’s NCAA Tournament began with a shocking 5-4 loss to fourth-seeded Rhode Island. The Gamecocks knocked off Duke 4-2 in an elimination game, then squared off against Rhode Island in another elimination game. This time, South Carolina easily disposed of the Rams, 23-2. The Gamecocks went on to defeat UNC-Wilmington in back-to-back games to advance to the Super Regionals for the first time since 2013.

A year ago, Mississippi State was the worst team in the SEC. Now, the Bulldogs are two wins away from returning to the College World Series for the first time since 2013. MSU won all three of its games in the regionals by at least three runs. The Bulldogs take on Arizona in Starkville this weekend.

Vanderbilt and Ole Miss were both eliminated in the NCAA Regionals. The Commodores lost to Xavier, 15-1, in the opening game. Washington eliminated Vandy, 9-8, in the following game. Ole Miss lost a pair of games to Utah and Tulane by scores of 6-5.
