The Blue Devil faithful were buzzing in Death Valley last Friday, Oct.19, as Etowah (9-0, 5-0) scored 27 unanswered points on the way to a 27-7 victory over Class 5A, Region 6 foe Alexandria (4-4, 2-3) in Alexandria.
Etowah can wrap up the region championship with a win over Boaz at home this Friday, Oct. 26.
“I thought we played at the pace we needed to tonight in order to be successful, said Etowah head coach Drew Noles. “We didn’t have to play real fast as far as the offensive hurry-up, but (quarterback) Brady (Troup) controlled the game well. I thought our offensive line played their best game, (and) I thought our defensive line played well and I thought our backs played well.”
After a botched punt snap from the Blue Devils, the Valley Cubs took possession of the ball at the Etowah 5-yard line with 10:32 remaining in the first quarter. Senior Roderick Dye punched it in from four yards out. Luis Torres’ PAT was good, making it 7-0, with 9:38 remaining in the first period of play.
Trent Davis’ 79-yard kick return to the Valley Cub 1-yard line set up Ny Ny Davis’ 1-yard punch for the Blue Devil score. Eric Edge’s kick was good with 9:16 remaining in the first quarter for a 7-7 tie.
The Blue Devils added another six points through the air when Troup connected with Deaundrea Williams for a 31-yard touchdown. The PAT was no good but Etowah led 13-7 with 1:56 remaining in the first half.
The Blue Devils kicked off the second half with an interception returned for a touchdown by Ny Ny Davis. Edge’s PAT was good, making it 20-7 with 9:36 remaining in the third quarter.
Blue Devils did not wait too long to add another six to the scoreboard.
Respective seven-yard runs from Trent Davis, Deaundrea Williams and Ny Ny Davis set up a 16-yard scoring run from Trent Davis. Edge nailed the extra point, making it 27-7 with 4:17 remaining in the third quarter.
Trent Davis (pictured above) rushed 23 times for 136 yards, while Troup went 4 for 11 for 30 yards.
