Comfort Care Hospice is hosting a Kickoff Childhood Cancer Awareness Month on September 1.

Aubie, Auburn’s famous tiger mascot, will be at Comfort Care Hospice from 9  to 9:45 a.m.

“We are very pleased he’s coming to help us kick the month off,” said Melissa Saylor, the event’s coordinator.

At 10 a.m., a 1-mile walk will take place in honor of children fighting cancer, children who have fought cancer before and to raise awareness for the cause.

“These kids need every voice they can get to raise awareness,” said Saylor.

The Hospice will also be taking t-shirt orders whose proceeds will be donated to Children’s of Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorder. T-shirts are $12-$15, depending on the size. Refreshments will be available at the event.

Every year people and organizations observe September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

“In the U.S., 15,780 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer every year; about 25 percent of them will not survive the disease,” says the American Childhood Cancer Organization’s website.
