Plainview scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to edge out Sardis 20-6, on Friday (Aug. 19) at SHS.
The Lions had chances to take control early in the game, but missed some opportunities. Drew Vaughan returned a Plainview punt to the Plainview 24. But Sardis had a series of penalties that backed the hosts up to third down and about 35 yards to go. The Lions were forced to punt.
Sardis got the ball back on the next play when Kale Walker picked off a pass at the Bear 43-yard line. But the Plainview defense held Sardis to a three-and-out.
The visitors then took possession on their own 24 and put together a quick scoring drive. Following a 36-yard pass from Phillip Dukes to Hayden White, Dukes connected with Jacob Wooten on a 53-yard touchdown pass to give Plainview the lead with 9:43 left in the half. Louis Hernandez added the PAT for the 7-0 lead.
The Lions put together a 4-play scoring drive later in the quarter. After Vaughn ground out a first down on a tough 10-yard run, quarterback Logan Gaskin broke a 43-yard touchdown run to put Sardis in position to tie the game at 3:50 left in the half. But Dylan Scott blocked the extra point and Sardis trailed 7-6.
The game remained close until the fourth quarter, when the Bears capitalized on big plays. Cade Willingham hauled in a 57-yard pass from Dukes to set up Plainview at the Sardis 11. A couple of plays later, Juan Marquez scored on a 2-yard run. The 2-point conversion failed, and Plainview led 13-6.
Two possessions later, a 33-yard pass from Dukes to Dylan Scott led to a 5-yard touchdown pass from Dukes to Wooten. The Hernandez PAT made it 20-6.
Sardis travels to Sylvania on Friday (Aug. 26).
