The Glencoe High softball team certainly appears ready for the upcoming AHSAA state playoffs.
The Lady Yellow Jackets banged out 17 hits – including three by Kaylee Higdon – on the way to a 15-1 thumping of Class 3A, Area 12 rival Hanceville in five innings last Tuesday (Apr. 16) at GHS. The victory tied Glencoe with Susan Moore for second place in the area standings.
“This game was a confidence builder for us,” said Glencoe head coach Tommy Stanley. “We have lost our share of close games this season but this was a good game for us all the way around. We had a good hitting day with everyone getting hits.”
Glencoe jumped out to an 8-0 after two innings and were never challenged behind the four-hit pitching performance of Hylan Higdon. In five innings, she allowed three hits and one run while striking out six and walking none.
The Lady Jackets added two runs in the third inning and closed out the game out with five runs in the fourth. Kinslee Gray, Noni Bethel, Emma Croy, Madalyn Amberson, and Kaylee Higdon all drove in runs during the frame.
Hanceville scored a lone run in the third inning long after the game was in hand.
At the plate for the Lady Yellow Jackets, Kaylee Higdon went 3-for-4 with four RBI; Gray went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored; Bethel went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored; Kayla Traylor went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored; Jaxson Sizemore went 2-for-3 with two runs scored; Madalin Gorham had a hit, two RBI and two runs scored; Madalyn Amberson had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored; and Emma Croy and Emma Hifield each had a hit, an RBI and a run scored.
“We feel we can play with anyone.” said Stanley. “We played toe-to-toe with Sardis and Hokes Bluff last week and have a game coming up with Gadsden City.”
