West End High senior quarterback Hunter Grant delivered a sensational performance to power the Patriots to a 48-12 thrashing of host Ider on Friday (Oct. 2) in a crucial Class 2A, Region 7 football matchup.
West End improved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the region standings behind their third consecutive win. Ider fell to 4-2, 1-2.
Grant rushed 11 times for 125 yards and one touchdown and was 14-of-18 passing for 280 yards and five touchdowns, with three of them going to Dustin Goodwin.
Grant threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Caegan Epperson on the second play of the game, while Goodwin hauled in a 45-yard TD pass from Grant to cap the Patriots’ second scoring drive.
Grant ran 21 yards for the Patriots’ third touchdown. He connected with Hunter Tarvin for a 35-yard scoring pass, which gave West End a 27-6 lead.
Ider trimmed the Pats’ margin to 27-12, but West End responded with 21 unanswered points.
Grant fired TD passes of 52 and 29 yards to Goodwin, making it 41-12. Marcus Strickland’s 6-yard run completed West End’s scoring.
“Matthew Hood and Andre Little led the defense in tackles from their linebacker positions,” said West End head coach Kyle Davis. “Chase Daniel, Jordan Malin, Hunter Demedicis, DeWayne Miller and Hunter Moody anchored the D-line that has only given up 12 points in the last 12 quarters.”
The Patriots host Gaston on Friday in another pivotal Region 7 game.
