Gaston held off Collinsville, 35-28, last Friday (Oct. 16)
in a key Class 2A, Region 7 game at Gaston. With the victory, the Bulldogs
(6-2, 3-2) clinched the region’s third playoff seed.
Jashun Cammeron paced the Bulldogs with 156 yards on the
ground on 17 carries and two touchdowns.
“He had a really good night and didn’t go down on first
contact,” Gaston head coach Swane Morris said. “Yards after first
contact was huge for us tonight. The offensive line blocked well and gave us
creases.”
Quarterback Jordan Douglas fired a 27-yard touchdown strike
to Dylan Gilchrist with 7:19 to go in the opening stanza. Douglas ran the two-point
conversion.
Less than three minutes later, Gaston extended the lead to
15-0. Driving 46 yards in four plays, Cammeron did the honors from 14 yards
out.
The teams swapped scores in the second quarter, with
Collinsville (5-3, 3-2) putting together a 65-yard, nine-play drive that ended
with Gerald Blakely’s 1-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 15-7 with 11:54
to go in the half. Gaston answering with 43 remaining in the quarter when
Douglas passed 24 yards to Bubba Satterfield for a 21-7 halftime lead.
Gaston increased its lead to 29-7 with 8:23 to go in the
third period when Cammeron ripped off a 75-yard touchdown run. Douglas ran in
the two-point conversion and the Dawgs were howling with a 29-7 lead.
Collinsville cut the lead to 29-14 with 1:18 remaining in
the third on Blakely’s 8-yard run.
Douglas then found Cammeron behind the Panther defense for a
16-yard touchdown and a 35-14 lead with 9:28 remaining in the game.
But the Bulldogs had to hang on when a 90-yard kickoff
return by Trenton Nash and a 70- yard touchdown pas from Trey Bowers to
Dominick Brockitt narrowed the gap to 35-28 with just over two minutes left.
Douglas finished with 47 yards rushing on 10 carries, while
J.D. Pope tallied 50 yards on 10 attempts. Douglas was 4-of-11 in passing for
87 yards.
Bowers was 15-of-27 in passing for 250 yards.”
The Bulldogs travel to Cleveland this Friday (Oct. 23) for their final
region game.
