Area runners compete at state cross country meet

Several local runners competed in the AHSAA cross country 5K state meet last Saturday (Nov. 14) at Oakville Indian Mounds Park in Moulton.

Two locals earned all-state honors after finishing in the top 10. In Class 3A girls, Westbrook Christian freshman Mary Reid Goodwin came in seventh out of 119 participants with a time of 19:57.91. Southside High senior Hunter Nails was ninth out of 212 participants in Class 6A boys with a time of 16:30.37. The top 15 finishers in each classification make the all-state team. 

In other area performances, Westbrook freshman Mitchell Cook was 31st out of 139 participants in 3A boys with a time of 17:55.96; Southside freshman Taylor Nails was 41st in 6A boys with a time of 17:34.91; Sardis’ Alexis Powell was 55th out of 125 participants in 4A girls with a time of 23:07.72; Glencoe’s Anna Beth Giles was 81st in 3A girls with a time of 24:10.62; Gaston’s Haley Bellew was 94th out of 123 participants in 1A-2A girls with a time of 25:55.11; and Sardis’ John Holland and Shadick Garmon were 97th and 125th, respectively, out of 133 participants in 4A boys with respective times of 20:00.03 and 21:41.52.   

Winning team championships were St. Bernard girls and Cold Springs boys in Class 1A-2A; Pleasant Valley girls and American Christian boys in Class 3A; Wilson girls and Trinity Presbyterian boys in Class 4A; Lawrence County girls and boys in Class 5A; John Carroll Catholic girls and Homewood boys in Class 6A; and Mountain Brook girls and Auburn boys in Class 7A.
