Several local players, including three each from West End and Southside, were nominated for the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Prep Football Spotlight for Week 1.
West End senior running back Jordan Malin rushed for 178 yards and four touchdowns on eight carries in the Patriots’ 65-42 win over Susan Moore. Senior quarterback Payne Stancil passed for 187 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 48 yards on four carries and another score. Senior defensive lineman Junior Tomas finished with 12 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery.
Southside senior running back Alaric Williams ran 15 times for 142 yards in the Panthers’ 44-29 victory over Hokes Bluff. Teammate Austin Willingham had 142 receiving yards and two touchdowns while intercepting two passes on defense. Freshman Nolan Johnson Kicked a 24-yard field goal.
Etowah junior running back Cory Thomas rushed 28 times for 165 yards and three touchdowns as the Blue Devils downed Madison County, 35-10.
Glencoe senior receiver Aaron Bush caught six passes for 157 yards and a touchdown to help the Yellow Jackets beat Westbrook Christian, 35-0.
