Ashville student-athletes win prestigious award

2021 Ashville High graduates Nick Spears and Meghan McCarthy were recently selected as the recipients of the 2021 Jim Nunnally Award.
Since 1968, the award has been given to the school’s male and female athlete that best represent Ashville High School and the City of Ashville through the facets of high character, determination, selflessness and sacrifice to one’s team and school. The award is voted on by the AHS student body.
McCarthy participated in cross country, volleyball, basketball, indoor track and outdoor track. She and her 4×800-meter relay teammates won a gold medal at the Class 4A outdoor track and field meet and a bronze medal at the Class 4A indoor state track and field meet.
She was awarded the 2020 Wendy’s All-American High School Heisman co-winner for Alabama. She will attend the University of North Alabama and participate on the cross country team.
Spears participated in wrestling and outdoor track and field. This past season, he helped the Bulldog wrestling team win the Class 1A-4A state and won a silver medal in the pole vault event at the Class 4A state track and field meet. He will attend the University of Mobile and participate on the track and field team.
