Retired educator and former Gadsden City Council member Cynthia W. Toles has announced her candidacy for the Gadsden City Board of Education, seeking to represent District 1.
A lifelong Gadsden resident and graduate of Gadsden City Schools, Toles said her decades of experience in education, public service and community leadership have prepared her to advocate for students, families and educators.
“I know and believe that every student should receive a high-quality education in a safe environment,” Toles said. “Every child is a genius. Once you identify the talent of children and put them in the environment that will nurture that talent, the sky is the limit.”
Toles retired after a career in education that included serving as an elementary school principal. She also served on the Gadsden City Council, where she gained experience in policymaking, community advocacy and educational initiatives.
Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in History, a Master of Science in Elementary Education, an Associate of Arts in Paralegal Studies, a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Education and a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Curriculum.
Throughout her career, Toles has remained active in educational and civic organizations. She served on the national board of the National Association of Elementary School Principals and on the National League of Cities’ national policy committee. She also earned certified municipal official and advanced certified municipal official designations.
Toles continues to support local students through educational outreach. She currently hosts a summer camp for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, provides private tutoring during the school year and regularly visits classrooms to read to students.
Her commitment to education spans more than six decades. This weekend, she and her classmates will celebrate the 60th anniversary of their high school graduation at the Carver Complex.
Toles said she is seeking a seat on the school board because she wants to help strengthen the partnership among students, parents, educators and the community.
“It is my intention to join an organization that advocates education, students and parents,” she said. “The school board is a governance body that prioritizes students, parents, faculty, staff, administrators and the community. I want to be part of that entity.”
If elected, Toles said she will lead with integrity, accountability and a commitment to student success.
“My leadership is grounded in integrity, accountability and a commitment to student success,” she said. “I am prepared to listen, collaborate and make thoughtful decisions that strengthen our schools and serve the families of District 1. Together, we can build a bright future for every student.”
