Scott gets first GCHS win in dominating fashion

By Deunte Marshall/Sports Correspondent

It took Matt Scott just two games to earn his first win as Gadsden City High head football coach, as the Titans (1-1, 1-0) posted a 41-7 victory over Class 5A, Region 7 rival Lee-Huntsville on Friday at GCHS.

The Titans were a perfect 4-for-4 in the red zone.

“I feel good about how we came out in the second half,” said Scott. “Our kids played hard no matter who was in the game” said Scott.

The game had the Titans’ name written all over it from the opening kickoff, where Gadsden City’s first possession of the game ended in a 40-yard Dante Rudolph touchdown run around left end with eight minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The Titans stopped a Lee fourth down fake punt attempt and cashed in on the big stop with Gabriel Ford’s 9-yard score with 5:31 remaining in the quarter.

The Titan defense stepped up on the next General possession when Tray Smothers returned an interception return for a score, giving Gadsden City the lead at 21-0 after 12 minutes of play.

Dante Rudolph’s 2-yard touchdown run sent GCHS into halftime with a 28-0 lead.

Gadsden City’s first score in the second half was Gabriel Ford’s 16-yard TD run as he dragged defenders into the end zone with him.

“I told him on the field that that’s what we like to see,” said Scott. “That’s going to be on our top 10 weekly highlight film for next week.”

Damon Williams scored on a 10-yard touchdown run to end the third quarter.

For Gadsden City, Jay Copeland was 6-for-6 in passing for 68 yards

Ford led Gadsden City on the ground with 94 yards and two touchdowns.

The Titans continue region play on Friday on Friday with a visit to Oxford.
