Lady Cardinals drop pair of ACCC games

By Chris McCarthy/Editor

Gadsden State dropped a doubleheader to Wallace State-Hanceville in Alabama Community College Conference softball action on Tuesday (Apr. 1) at the Gadsden Sports Complex.

The Lady Cardinals (16-20, 0-4) lost the opener by a score of 14-5, then fell 7-2 in the nightcap.

In the first game, the Lady Lions put across eight runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead for good.

Gadsden State took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first by way of Hope Hauser’s two-run base hit that plated Tomi Kate O’Neal and Regina Richey.

The hosts gained a four-run cushion in the fourth when O’Neal drew a leadoff walk and Hannah McCreless belted a home run just over the centerfield fence.

There were few bright spots for the Lady Cardinals for the rest of the way, other than Sara Beth Rhudy’s score off an error in the sixth.

By that time the Lady Lion held a 9-5 advantage, and the visitors notched five runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away.

Coming on in relief in the bottom of the seventh, Paige Browning allowed a one-out walk by O’Neal before retiring the next two GSCC batters.

Hauser and McCreless each went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

In six innings, Wallace starter Rachel Ragland struck out seven while allowing tow earned runs, three hits and two walks.

At the plate for the Lady Lions, Andrea McKenzie and Sarah Jordan each went 2-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored.
