Local football players recognized

Several local high school football players were nominated for both the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Offensive Player of the Week and Alabama High School Athletic Association Prep Spotlight awards for the week of Oct. 24.

Westbrook Christian sophomore quarterback Wil Appleton threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns in the Warriors’ 49-12 win over Ashville on Oct. 23. 

Coosa Christian senior quarterback Johnny Grizzard finished with 392 combined yards and five touchdowns in the Conquerors’ 72-42 loss to Spring Garden. Grizzard threw for 260 yards and a 34-yard touchdown and rushed for 132 yards and touchdowns of 60, 38, 1 and 5 yards.

Gaston senior halfback Mitchell Smith rushed 16 times for 113 yards and four touchdowns, including the game-winning 11-yard score with 24 seconds left, as Gaston beat Cleveland, 35-28 to secure the No. 2 seed in Class 2A, Region 7.

Glencoe senior lineman Chance Duncan had 15 tackles, including three for a loss, and two sacks in the Yellow Jackets’ 56-0 win over Pleasant Valley.
