Gaston High made a quick exit in the Class 2A AHSAA state softball tournament on Friday (May 15).

The Lady Bulldogs dropped a 10-0 decision to Goshen, then lost 15-0 to G.W. Long at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.

Goshen25-19-2)  took an early 5-0 lead after three innings and was never threatened thereafter. The big hit was a towering home run by Kaitlyn Gamble off of Gaston starting pitcher Haley Morgan. The Lady Eagles added one run in the fourth, two in the fifth and two more in the sixth for the shutout win. Samantha Mathis got the lone hit for Gaston, a double in the fourth inning.

“We came out a little tight,” said Gaston head coach Jay Williams. “If we could have pushed a run across early things might have been a little different.”

The game against G.W. Long ended after four innings due to the mercy rule.

The Lady Rebels scored seven runs in the first inning, three in the third and five in the fourth. Winning pitcher Olivia Baker allowed no hits with five strikeouts.

Haley Morgan took the loss in both games.
