Three local student-athletes were nominated this week for the Alabama Sports Writers Association Player of the Week award and the Alabama High School Athletic Association Prep Spotlight for Week 9 of the 2012 high school football season.

West End junior quarterback Levi Weems accounted for four touchdowns – two rushing and two passing – to lead the Patriots to their first win of the season in a 28-12 victory over Gaston.

Southside junior running back Blake Devine had 137 yards rushing with a 75-yard touchdown run and returned two kickoffs for 116 yards in the Panthers’ 63-20 win over Brewer. Devine’s 94-yard kickoff return for a TD was the longest in school history and sealed the Panthers’ first winning regular season since 1993. Teammate Austin Snyder, a senior defensive lineman, recorded 11 tackles (including three for a loss), two sacks and an interception against Brewer.
