Area football players recognized

Seven local players, including three from Gadsden City, were nominated for the Alabama High School Athletic Association Prep Spotlight for the week of Oct. 14.

Hokes Bluff freshman halfback Darrian Meads rushed 21 times for 207 yards and four touchdowns as the Eagles beat Anniston 35-6 to clinch their first playoff spot since 2007.

Coosa Christian senior quarterback Jace Mills completed 12-of-19 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown and rushed for a 17 -yard score that was set up by his interception on defense as the Conquerors beat Gaylesville 21-18 to secure a playoff berth for the first time since 2009. Teammate and senior receiver Caden Davidson caught seven passes for 94.

Gadsden City senior halfback Damon Williams rushed 25 times for 172 yards and a touchdown in the Titans’ 62-27 win over Sparkman. Senior linebacker DeWayne Parker intercepted two passes, one which he returned for a touchdown. Junior quarterback Ryan Sparks was 6-of-13 passing for 157 yards and four touchdowns.

Gaston senior cornerback Alexander Allen returned an interception 23 yards for a touchdown and returned a fumble 21 yards for a score to lead a defense that accounted for four touchdowns as the Bulldogs locked up a playoff berth with a 54-10 win over Westbrook Christian.
