Coosa’s Grizzard named ASWA Player of the Week

Coosa Christian’s Johnny Grizzard earned state recognition for his standout performance last week against Woodville in high school football.

After accounting more than 400 yards and eight touchdowns – six passing, one rushing and one on an interception return – in the Conquerors’ s 60-28 victory, the senior quarterback was named the Alabama Sports Writers Association Offensive Player of the Week.

Against the Panthers, Grizzard completed 15 of 23 passes for 364 yards and six touchdowns, rushed six times for 83 yards and a touchdown, and returned an interception 85 yards for a score to lead Coosa to its first 2014 victory.

Three other local players were recognized by the ASWA. Coosa Christian sophomore receiver Jace Mills caught seven of Grizzard’s passes for 117 yards and three touchdowns; Glencoe senior running back Thomas Ozmint rushed for 193 yards and two touchdowns in the Yellow Jackets’ 31-28 victory over Piedmont; and Etowah junior running back Paul Ruiz rushed 17 times for 292 yards and five touchdowns in the Blue Devils’ 40-20 victory over Fairview.
