Behind a three-touchdown performance from freshman quarterback Tyren Dupree, Cherokee County earned a 28-14 win over Hokes Bluff in Class 4A, Region 6 action on Friday in Centre.
Dupree completed 15-of-29 pass attempts for 158 yards and two scores. He also rushed for 67 yards on 13 carries with another touchdown for the Warriors (2-4, 1-3).
After Hokes Bluff (2-4, 2-2) took an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter on Cam Dowdy’s 60-yard touchdown run and Landon Johnson’s 35-yard touchdown pass to Phillip Ward, Dupree put the Warriors on the scoreboard with a 5-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to cut the Eagle lead to 14-7.
It was all Warriors in the second half. Dupree found Nahum Horton on a 17-yard scoring strike and then had a 13-yard touchdown connection with Justin McKnight in the third quarter, putting Cherokee County out in front, 21-14. J.T. Hill accounted for the only touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run for the final.
Dowdy led the Eagles on the ground with 85 yards on 10 carries.
Johnson completed 6-of-19 pass attempts for 58 yards, while Ward caught three passes for 57 yards.
Ward finished with 17 tackles, while Noah Click had 17. Ward also had an interception.
Hokes Bluff continues region play on Friday with at home against Saks.
