Glencoe, Westbrook spikers headed to state

Glencoe and Westbrook Christian will compete in the AHSAA state volleyball tournament next week in Birmingham.
On Wednesday, Oct. 25 at the Class 3A North Super Regional Tournament in Huntsville, The Lady Yellow Jackets (18-36) defeated Fayette County, 25-17, 25-20, 25-21 in the first round, then out-lasted Susan Moore, 25-19, 26-24, 16-25, 20-25, 16-14 in the quarterfinals to punch their ticket to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2018. Both teams will play on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at the Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham. Westbrook faces St. Luke’s Episcopal, while Glencoe plays Mobile Christian.The Lady Warriors (30-13) opened regionals with a 3-0 sweep of Carbon Hill, followed by a 3-0 victory over Phil Campbell.
In Thursday’s semifinal round, Glencoe lost to Geraldine, 3-0, and Westbrook fell to Plainview, 3-0. That set up a match late Thursday between the two area rivals and Etowah County neighbors for third place in the tournament, which Westbrook won by a score of 3-1. For the tournament for Westbrook, Marley Cox had 38 digs, 29 kills, six blocks and four aces; Landri Lipscomb had 23 digs, 22 kills, eight blocks and seven aces; Raylee Neal had 96 assists, 14 digs and five aces; Kylee Wyatt had 43 digs and two aces; Raegan Harrell had 48 kills, 16 digs and eight aces; Henley Beddingfield had 30 digs and one ace; and Ellison Stewart had 23 kills, 15 digs, seven aces and two blocks.
For Glencoe against Fayette County, Emma Croy had 11 kills, followed by Ali Jo Amos with seven, Evelyn Nowak with five and Libby King with three. Nowak also had two blocks.
Abi Bunt distributed 14 assists, while Brianna Adcock had 12. Adcock also had two aces.
Croy came up with 19 digs, followed by Kaelyn Hollis with 18, Bunt with 11, King with six and Adcock with five.
Against Susan Moore, Croy had 16 kills, followed by Amos with 12, King with 11, Nowak with seven and Bunt with five.
Bunt had 31 assists, while Adcock had 10. Amos and Nowak both had three blocks.
Hollis had 33 digs, followed by Croy with 18, Adock with 16, Bunt with 14, Gracyn Bunt with 13 and King with 11.
Southside went 1-1 at regionals. On Wednesday, The Class 5A Lady Panthers (26-21) defeated Jasper, 3-0 and lost to Arab, 3-0. Also on Wednesday, West End (13-14) lost to Lexington, 3-0, in the first round.
