Sardis High beat host Randolph, 28-20, last Friday (Oct. 27) at SportsMed Field in Huntsville to clinch first place in Class 4A, Region 7.
Sardis improved to 6-3 overall and 5-1 atop the region.
“Our offense really lined up and pounded the ball,” said Sardis coach Gene Hill. “That keeps the other team’s offense off the field. That’s probably the best defense that we could put on the field.”
Lion senior quarterback Logan Gaskin ran for two touchdowns, one from the Raider 4 and other from the 1. He also threw an 11-yard touchdown to Jacob Hopper.
Temon Wilson ran 11 yards for a touchdown.
Randolph (6-3, 4-2) scored on Graham Copeland’s 56-yard pass to Brad Layton, Levon Fletcher’s 3-yard run and Copeland’s 2-yard run. The Raiders’ winning streak ended at four games. Randolph will travel in the first round of the playoffs as the region’s third seed.
Gaskin completed 13-of-21 passes for 152 yards with one interception. He also had 14 carries for 35 yards.
“We couldn’t do it if it wasn’t for our coaches,” said Gaskin. “We had a really good week of practice. They make it easy for us to come play.”
With the game tied 14-14, Sardis took the second half kickoff and drove 61 yards in 10 plays, capped by Wilson’s run. Javen Smith kicked the extra point for a 21-14 lead.
Sardis junior Drew Vaughn had 25 carries for 90 yards. Wilson had seven carries for 28 yards.
“I just think of it as one more play, one more play,” said Vaughn. “Just keep it going. I was just thinking region championship for my team. So push through it. Play hard. We got this region championship. I’m happy about it.”
Sardis finished with 351 total yards, with 199 rushing.
Sardis visits Boaz this week before hosting Cherokee County in the first round of the state playoffs on Nov. 10.
