Southside runners shine at Paul Bryant Invitational

The Southside girls cross country team placed first and the boys finished second at the Paul Bryant Invitational 5K on Sept. 30 in Tuscaloosa.
Counting the two junior varsity races, the Panthers won three of the four events.
The SHS girls had five of the top 10 finishers. Marlee Tucker led the way with a fourth-place showing of 22:03, followed by Mallory Tucker in sixth at 22:15.93, Adalyn Phillips in eight at 22:51.06, Taylor Dortch in ninth at 23:22.43 and Zoie Menk in 10th at 23:27. Posting top 20 finishes were Payton Ridley (13th, 24:02.11) and Hannah Stanfield (20th, 25:11.11).
The Lady Panthers’ point total of 32 was nine points better than runner-up Northridge.
Evan Christopher won the boys event with a time of 16:17 out of 47 runners, while Max Valentine came in sixth at 17:15. Placing in the top 20 were Tanner Griggs (13th, 18:22.66) and Jackson Brown (16th, 19:14.73).
Also helping Southside’s cause was Keaton Yingling (26th, 20:31.89) and Grant Matthews (28th, 21:07.18).
The Panthers swept both junior varsity events, with the boys putting six runners in the top 10.
Levi Kay won his first cross country 5K with a time of 19:46.65. He was followed by Caleb Hibbs in second place at 20:27.67, Kaleb Pepon in fifth place at 22:24.61, Mason Borgestrode in sixth place at 22:41.16, Harrison Pierce in seventh place at 22:44.72) and Keegan Sherrell in ninth place at 22:51.58S.
For the JV girls, Lucy Valentine won her first 5K with a time of 23:24.98. She was followed by Riley Hulsey in second place at 24:33.69, Maddie Kate Chandler in third place at 25:41.04, Emily Brown in sixth place at 26:22.81, Ava Fraisure in eight place at 28:11.23 and Lucy Griggs in 10th place at 28:39.87.
