Southside, Sardis qualify for state softball tournament; Glencoe, Gaston fall in regionals

Southside High will compete in the Class 5A state tournament this week after finishing runner-up at the North Regional Tournament last weekend in Huntsville.

The Lady Panthers begin the state tournament with a game against Saraland on Friday in Montgomery.

Southside opened the regional tournament on May 10 with a 9-4 win over Arab, then defeated Cullman, 5-1, on May 11.

The Lady Panthers lost to Scottsboro, 4-2, in the semifinals to fall to the loser bracket finals, where they edged Lawrence County, 7-6. 

Sardis High qualified for the Class 4A state tournament this week in Montgomery after defeating Alexandria, 15-1, in the North Central Regional Tournament loser bracket finals last Saturday (May 11) in Tuscaloosa.

The Lady Lions open the state tournament on Thursday against Corner. 

Sardis began the regional tournament on May 10 with a 10-9 win over Alexandria, followed by a 7-2 win over St. Clair County. 

The Lady Lions then lost to Cherokee County, 2-1, on May 11 in the winners bracket semifinal before beating Alexandria. 

Payton Golden had three hits Against Alexandria, while Jadie Fobbus had two. Kameron Carter had one hit and was intentional walked in her three other at-bats. Bethany Chamblee, Hayley Wofford, Madelyn Gazaway and Kaycee Mashburn each had a hit, while Krista Hubbard twice reached base on walks. 

Chamblee pitched a complete game in seven innings to earn the win.

For the tournament, Carter had four hits and two home runs and was intentional walked eight times. 

Golden had seven hits, followed by Mashburn with six, Fobbus with five, Chamblee with four and Hubbard with three. 

Chamblee had three wins on the mound. 

Glencoe High fell just short of qualifying for the Class 3A state tournament this week in Montgomery.

After opening with a loss the 3A South Central Tournament, the Lady Yellow Jackets won three straight playback games before falling in the in the loser bracket finals. 

An 8-6 loss to White Plains on May 10 dropped Glencoe to the playback bracket, where the Lady Jackets defeated Trinity Presbyterian by a score of 16-7.

On May 11, Glencoe beat Central Coosa, 2-0, and Leeds 7-1, to reach the finals, where the Lady Jackets lost to Saks, 7-1. 

Gaston High went 2-1 at the North Regional Tournament last weekend in Huntsville.

After opening the tournament on May 11 with an 11-0 loss to Ider, the Lady Bulldogs posted a 7-6 victory over Red Bay in the loser bracket.

Gaston then exited the tournament with an 11-1 loss to Lexington.
