Westbrook tennis teams compete at state tournament

The Westbrook Christian girls and boys tennis teams took eighth and 10th place, respectively, at the Class 1A-3A state tournament on Monday and Tuesday (Apr. 21-22) in Montgomery.

The Lady Warriors finished with 14 points, while the Warriors totaled eight.

Charley Rowe advanced the farthest for both teams, falling Bayside Academy’s Trent Kennegieter in the No. 1 singles championship match, 1-6, 1-6. Rowe beat Houston Academy’s Aliabadi, 6-0, 6-2; Lauderdale County’s Tully, 6-1, 6-2; and Trinity’s Vermillian, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 to reach the finals. 

In No. 2 boys singles, Cameron Norwood defeated Sheffield’s C. Roddy, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4, before losing to Plainview’s Clark, 1-6, 2-6.

In No. 3 singles, Alex Cochran defeated Lauderdale County’s Bratcher, 6-3. 6-3, before losing to Houston Academy’s Dunlap, 2-6, 2-6.

In other singles action for Westbrook, No. 4 Jay Dial lost to Sheffield’s King, 0-6, 4-6; No. 5 Hayden Clay lost to Altamont’s Sands, 3-6, 0-6; and No. 6 Hunter Benefield lost to Decatur Heritage’s Gladish, 2-6, 4-6. 

In girls No. 1 singles, Reagan King had a first-round by before defeating Deshler’s Kyra Holway, 6-1, 6-4. King then lost to Madison Academy’s Sydney Homan, 1-6, 4-6.

In No. 4 singles, Alex Dugger had a first round bye before defeating Trinity’s Betsy Byrne, 6-4, 6-1. Dugger then lost to Deshler’s Lauren Cantrell, 3-6, 2-6.

In other singles action for Westbrook, No. 2 Wells Ford had a first-round bye before losing to Bayside Academy’s Sarah Noblles, 4-6, 4-6; No. 3 Sarah McCauley lost to Houston Academy’s Claire Duerson, 0-6, 0-6; No. 5 Taylor Cornutt had a first-round bye before losing to Trinity’s Carolyn Albritton, 1-6, 2-6; and No. 6 Alley McSizemore lost to Shoals Christian’s Hannah Grace Thompson, 5-7, 3-6. 

In girls doubles for Westbrook, No. 1 King/Ford had a first-round bye before defeating American Christian’s Taylor/Coogler, 6-4, 6-4. King and Ford then lost to Madison Academy’s Homan/Young, 3-6, 0-6.

In No. 2 doubles, McCauley/Cornutt had a first-round bye before losing to Montgomery Academy’s Robertson/Griffin, 0-6, 3-6. 

In No 3 doubles, Dugger/McSizemore had a first-round bye before losing to Decatur Heritage’s Little/Bowman, 6-2, 2-6, 3-6.
