  With 5:23 to play in the first quarter, Sylvania’s Nick Shepherd drilled a 30-yard field goal to give the visitors from Dekalb County held a 3-0 lead over Glencoe in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs on Friday (Nov. 7).

It was at at point that Dylan Stone took over and had a career night in what turned out to be a  56-19 victory for the Yellow Jackets.

 The Yellow Jacket senior quarterback rushed 14 times for 244 yards and five touchdowns and was also 6 of 7 in passing for 85 yards and two touchdowns.

Glencoe (11-0) will host Lauderdale County (9-2) on Friday in the second round.

Head coach Lee Ozmint had nothing but praise for the job his quarterback and offensive line did after Sylvania “took our tailback out of the game.” 

Glencoe rolled up 489 offensive yards, 404 coning on the ground. 

“(Dylan) Stone stepped up and had a solid performance,” said Ozmint.  

Following Shepherd’s field goal, the Glencoe offense took over the game. 

Stone capped a four-play, 57-yard drive with a 46-yard run to take a 7-3 lead. 

Glencoe added to its lead on its next possession, driving 83 yards in four plays. Stone scored on a 15-yard run and Joseph Bright booted the second of his eight extra points to give Glencoe a 14-3 lead with one second to go in the first quarter.

Stone then added to the lead with a 17-yard run with 5:44 to go in the half. His score capped a 45-yard drive. 

The Yellow Jackets added another score a minute later when Stone threw a 48-yard touchdown strike to Andrew Willis to put Glencoe up 28-3. Stone added a 47-yard TD run before the Rams managed a touchdown and field goal to make the halftime score 35-12.

Stone threw his second TD pass of the evening, this time for 13 yards, to Willis with 8:23 to go in the third quarter, increasing the Yellow Jacket lead to 42-12. 

Stone also scored on a 14-yard run to cap a seven-play, 62-yard drive. The third stanza ended with Glencoe holding a 49-12 lead. 

Cade Alred closed out the scoring for Glencoe with a 5-yard touchdown run with 11:24 to go in the game. Kenneth Chaney added a consolation score for Sylvania with 5:18 to go on a 3-yard run.

Also for Glencoe, Thomas Ozmint rushed 10 times for 70 yards and one touchdown. Wills had two catches for 61 yards. 

Defensively, Chance Duncan had eight tackles, including three for a loss, and two sacks. Pace Ozmint had 11 tackles, while Mason Brown had seven stops and a sack.
