Westbrook Christian soccer star Ali Collins signed a soccer scholarship with Columbia (S.C.) College during a special ceremony in the school’s gymnasium on May 14.

Southside whips Hartselle, advances to finals

It took Southside only two games to handily defeat sixth-ranked Hartselle last week in the Class 5A state semifinals in front of a record crowd at Danny League Field in Southside. The Tigers eliminated the Panthers from the playoffs two years ago in the semifinals.

“42” filming underway at Rickwood Field

The Jackie Robinson movie “42” began filming at Birmingham’s Tutwiler Hotel on May 14, before moving to Rickwood Field on Tuesday.
A production truck and vintage automobiles were parked outside the Tutwiler late Sunday afternoon in anticipation of the first day of filming.

Gaston High School basketball star Morgan Beaird was the most highly decorated female high school athlete during the 2011-12 school year.
Beaird led the Lady Bulldogs to the Northeast Regional Tournament at Jacksonville State University. Beaird earned All-Area and All-County during her senior season, and was selected as The Messenger’s Little-7 Player of the Year.
