ASWA releases All-State baseball team

Four area players were named to the 2012 Alabama Sports Writers Association All-State varsity baseball team over the weekend.

Southside High School’s Andrew Fuhrman made first team in Class 5A and Westbrook Christian’s John Mayfield was named first team in Class 2A.

Fuhrman led Southside to the Class 5A state finals in Montgomery, where the Panthers earned a state runner-up

ASWA releases All-State softball team

Three area players were named to the 2012 Alabama Sports Writers Association All-State softball teams.

Glencoe’s Jamie McGuire and West End’s Courtney Oliver were given first team honors, while Sardis’ Kameron Carter was given honorable mention.

McGuire was named first team catcher of Class 3A. The junior led all area schools in batting, posting a .526 batting average over 133 at
