Four area players were named to the 2012 Alabama Sports Writers Association All-State varsity baseball team over the weekend.
Southside High School’s Andrew Fuhrman made first team in Class 5A and Westbrook Christian’s John Mayfield was named first team in Class 2A.
Fuhrman led Southside to the Class 5A state finals in Montgomery, where the Panthers earned a state runner-up trophy. The junior was named as an All-State designated hitter, batting .402 over 117 at bats with nine doubles and 20 runs batted in.
Mayfield was a top performer for Westbrook Christian for four years. The senior shortstop earned first team honors as a utility player. He batted .463 for the Warriors with five home runs, nine doubles and two triples. Mayfield was handy on the mound, tallying a 5-1 record with a 1.23 earned run average in over 300 innings this season (including playoffs).
Southside’s Caleb Butler and Gaston’s Jordan McCartney were given honorable mention in Class 5A and Class 1A, respectively.
