W. E. Striplin Elementary hosted a Night of Wonder for Pre-k4 students in the district on May 2.
The event featured stations of activities for Pre-k4 students. One activity was based on the popular Dr. Suess book “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.” The activity involved recognizing colors and counting. Another activity involved a sand and pinto bean station, where students could use tools of different sizes and colors to play.
Students received a tote bag with school supplies, such as a notebook, calculator, crayons and more, for attending. Students also received a goldfish and instructions on how to care for the animal.
Snacks of popcorn and slushies were offered to attendees. Additionally, a pudding based earthworm, oreo and gummi worm project was held.
A book fair was held in the school library, featuring Crane Book Fair products out of Prattville. A representative from Gadsden Public Library attended the event to sign the students up for library cards.
At several stations throughout the night of wonder were Wonderopolis.org stations, which allow kids to look up information about a variety of subjects on a safe site.
The event came about as the result of a grant from Wonderopolis.org, a website that offers tools for learning. Striplin Principal Delsia Malone was recently named a Wonder lead Ambassador by the website.
“I will represent our district and state promoting literacy and fostering a love for inquiry in students,” said Malone.
The Night of Wonder was the first of its kind in the district, and cost the students nothing.
“I’m very glad to have this opportunity,” said Malone.
Malone also thanked the district for its help in the event.
“Our district has been overwhelmingly supportive,” said Malone.
