Sardis drives past DAR

The Sardis Lions moved into fourth place in the Class 4A, Region 7 football standings by outscoring DAR, 41-27 on Friday (Oct. 7) in Grant. It was the first meeting between the schools.

The Lions improved to 3-4, 2-2 and will travel to Madison County (4-3, 3-1) this Friday (Oct. 14). Madison County and Madison Academy are tied for second in the region standings, while North Jackson is first at 5-0.

Junior quarterback Logan Gaskin engineered a Sardis offense that rolled up 27 first downs and 496 total yards against DAR. Gaskin finished 13-of-19 passing for 211 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed 17 times for 108 yards and a score.

Drew Vaughn ran 15 times for 110 yards and a touchdown for the Lions, while Javin Smith converted 5-of-6 extra points.

Sardis built a 14-0 first-quarter lead as Gaskin threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jake Ross and then ran one yard for a TD.

Both teams scored 20 points in the second period.

DAR (1-6, 0-4) pulled within 14-6, but the Lions answered with Gaskin’s 15-yard scoring pass to Chase Bright.

DAR cut it to 21-12, but Sardis pushed its advantage to 34-12 behind Jesus Hernandez’s 2-yard TD run and Gaskin’s 58-yard scoring strike to Jacob Hopper.

The Patriots trimmed it to 34-20 at intermission.

Sardis made it 41-20 when Vaughn scored on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter. DAR also added a fourth-quarter score.

Hopper caught two passes for 99 yards, and Ross had four receptions for 45 yards.

Kale Walker grabbed an interception for the Lions.
