Westbrook Christian School conquered Asbury High School on Oct. 7 in Rainbow City. What looked like a potential shutout until the third quarter ended in a four-touchdown lead and a win for WCS. The final score for the Class 2A, Region 6 game was 41 – 13.
The first quarter of the game was a lockout, ending with a 27-point lead for the home team. The period was not, however, devoid of excitement; soon after junior Hunter Grimes scored the first points of the game at the halfway point of the quarter, he recovered an Asbury fumble and ran almost the length of the field for a second touchdown with 5:41 left.
Westbrook’s third touchdown was also a return, this time 75 yards by senior Garrett Perkins.
Asbury took possession briefly, but Westbrook intercepted a pass for another touchdown by senior Blake Young at the end of the quarter.
The second quarter began with Westbrook in possession of the ball. After multiple incomplete passes and zero-gain runs, Grimes earned another touchdown for the Warriors with 5.5 seconds left in the half.
Asbury had possession in the beginning of the third quarter but lost the ball after a few plays resulted in a five-yard loss. Perkins scored another touchdown with 7:20 left in the quarter, bringing the score to 41 – 0.
Most of the final quarter passed with no score and Asbury maintaining possession of the ball, finally resulting in the visiting team’s first touchdown by junior Cody Sampson with four minutes left. Westbrook took possession but could not keep it, with Asbury’s Dayton Bagwell scoring the final touchdown of the game with 1:17 to spare.
When asked what the team learns from such a substantial win, Westbrook head coach Brian Mintz said, “We got to look at some guys that we haven’t [seen] during the course of the year, and maybe work on a few things… We got a ton of things to work on, but we’re glad to get a win.”
