From the frying pan into the fire?

Playing Fyffe and Ider in back-to-back weeks would have to have that type of feeling for Westbrook Christian.

“I think Ider has what it takes to compete with Fyffe this year,” Warrior coach Tony Osborne said. “They have some good skill players and some big offensive linemen that have been there for a couple of years.

“I still think that just about every team in this region (Region 7 of Class 2A) could beat any other region team on any give night.”

For the past few seasons, the Hornets had a great running back – Teague Whitaker. But he has graduated, and Osborne sees a stable of backs replacing him.

One of them – Matthew Collins – ran back two kickoffs for touchdowns last week against West End.

As for the Warriors, trying to improve on the fundamentals is key right now.

“We’re looking at film and seeing our mistakes and trying to fix them,” Osborne said. “It’s mostly little stuff like the correct drop for the quarterback or the routes the receivers run.”

Osborne said that it is normal for one of his teams to be still at this stage in the first half of the season.

“We’ve corrected about 80 percent of what we wanted fixed after the jam-boree, so there’s still a little way to go.”

Last week against Fyffe, Jonathan Ford completed 15-of-26 passes for 285 yards. He also led in rushing with 53 yards on eight carries. Jake Kilgo added 35 yards on six attempts.

Darrell Whatley had three receptions for 152 yards, while Dylan McClain caught three passes for 38 yards.
