Pell City is only 2-3, but what’s more important is that the Panthers are 2-1 in region play.
After making the Class 5A quarterfinals, the Panthers made the move up to 6A in 2004. They went to the 6A postseason for four straight years but haven’t been back since 2007.
“They’re a good team in a tough region,” Titans coach Joe Billingsley said. “Top to bottom, this is probably the toughest region in the state. Their record is certainly not indicative of their talent level.”
Gadsden City suffered a tough loss last week, but Billingsley is concentrating on the future.
“We’re just trying to get better,” he said. “We want to play our brand of football, and there wasn’t much of that last week.
“We played poorly across the board, but these kids are resilient and they’re ready to prove themselves again.”
A win this week wouldn’t nail down a playoff berth for the Titans but it would come close.
Pell City is still in the postseason mix but needs another couple of victories to be in. Currently, the Titans share first place with Clay-Chalkville in the Class 6A, Region 6 standings, a game ahead of Pell City and Huntsville.
