Gaston isn’t your typical 0-5 football team, by anyone’s standards – and Westbrook coach Tony Osborne is well aware of that fact as the Bulldogs pay a visit to Rainbow City tonight (Oct. 5).
“In this region, you can be pretty good and be winless,” Osborne said. “Gaston is a good example of that.”
Westbrook currently occupies third place in Class 2A, Region 7, while Gaston shares fourth place with Etowah County neighbor West End.
Youth has played a large part in the Bulldogs losses, while talent has kept most of the scores close.
“We’re very inconsistent,” Gaston coach Josh Averett said. “We’ll have a good play or good drive, then turn around and do just the opposite the next time. I guess having a young team contributes to that.”
One of the youngest players – freshman quarterback Jordan Douglas – wasn’t as effective as in the past two weeks, but Averett still sees him coming along well.
“He got beat up some Friday,” Averett said. “The line didn’t do such a good job of protecting him.”
Meanwhile, Westbrook comes in with two consecutive wins.
“Another week, another good team to face,” Averett said.
